Why Professional HVAC Installation Matters

According to EPA-sponsored research, over 70% of homes suffer from duct air leakage and airflow issues, and 74% have incorrect refrigerant charge. These flaws result in higher utility bills, poor comfort, and premature equipment failure. A new HVAC system is only as good as its installation.

At Advantage Home Performance, we perform Manual J load calculations to right-size your system, verify duct performance through pressure testing, and fine-tune refrigerant charge using digital gauges. We take commissioning seriously and apply best practices to maximize system performance and comfort, even when we’re working within the limitations of an existing duct system.

Two Paths to Replacement: Emergency vs Performance

Most homeowners wait for their HVAC system to fail during extreme weather. We call this the “emergency replacement” path — or what we also refer to as “Like for Like.” In these cases, if you currently have a three-ton system, we’ll typically install another three-ton unit. Many customers are reluctant to downsize, even if the original system was oversized.

While we’re fully equipped to respond quickly and restore comfort, emergency replacements can limit opportunities for upgrades like duct modifications or full system balancing.

The better approach is the “performance path.” By planning ahead, we can inspect your attic, evaluate insulation, air leakage, and duct design — and make strategic improvements alongside your system replacement. This results in better performance, longer equipment life, and improved resale value.

Whole-Home Assessment Comes First

We don’t just replace equipment — we assess the home as a system. Our evaluation includes attic inspection, duct layout review, and insulation verification. We size equipment based on design temperatures — 108°F in Phoenix, 94°F in Prescott — to ensure year-round performance without oversizing.

Our Manual J reports incorporate:

  • R-values of insulation and ductwork
  • Window U-values and shading
  • Infiltration and duct leakage
  • Attic configuration and solar exposure

The Duct System Is Half the Equation

Most HVAC contractors ignore the duct system. We don’t. At least 70% of homes require duct modifications and sealing to meet modern efficiency standards. Issues like undersized returns, long duct runs, and leaky connections can severely undermine system performance.

We inspect every return and supply run. If airflow is too low or static pressure is too high, we may recommend return upgrades, layout changes, or duct sealing. That said, we recognize that many customers don’t have the budget for a complete air distribution system replacement. When that’s the case, we do our best to optimize the system within those constraints.

Air Balancing and Pressure Relief

Although we own flow hoods and use them selectively for diagnostics, they are not typically used to commission every job. That’s because most system replacements inherit legacy duct issues, and customers often prioritize restoring comfort over complete reengineering.

We do, however, address obvious pressure imbalances and make targeted recommendations. When needed, we suggest solutions like transfer grilles or jump ducts to relieve pressurization caused by closed interior doors.

Proper Charge and Commissioning

Correct refrigerant charge directly impacts comfort and energy efficiency. We use digital gauges and follow subcooling/superheat methods to dial in the charge and verify performance.

These steps help prevent premature equipment failure and support warranty compliance.

Energy Efficiency + Tax Credits

A well-installed system can reduce energy waste by 20–30%. Through 2032, the federal Energy Efficient Home Improvement Credit (Section 25C) offers tax incentives for qualifying HVAC equipment, air sealing, and insulation improvements.

We also help you take advantage of local rebates, including the updated TEP thermostat rebate of $35, and up to $700 in HVAC-related incentives through the TEP rebate program, as well as federal tax credits and home energy rebates.

Our Installation Process

  • Consultation – Review your goals and assess equipment performance.
  • Full Evaluation – Attic inspection, duct testing, load calculations, leakage review.
  • System Design – Propose right-sized options and any necessary upgrades.
  • Installation & Commissioning – Set equipment, verify charge and airflow, ensure performance.
  • Follow-Up – Post-installation support and check-in to ensure satisfaction.

Choose Performance, Not Just Replacement

Many HVAC contractors cut corners to reduce costs or speed up jobs. We don’t. We take the time to evaluate your home, use proven diagnostic methods, and install systems that are designed to perform—not just function.

You’re not just buying a new AC unit — you’re investing in comfort, efficiency, and long-term peace of mind.
